Freedom
Freedom meant life to the slaves of the South. It meant that they could no longer use the Under Ground Railroad to hide from their masters. Harret Tubman worked on the underground railroad. She had freed over 300 slaves and went back to the South 19 times without getting caught. This picture is an example of a family hiding in a house on the Underground Railroad. They would hide in false walls and behind bookcases. They would also hide in false bottoms of wagons and ride to the North. They would run away in the cover of night fall and jump in rivers so slave owner's dogs could not trace them down.
